In contrast to the advice I have given so far on how to break out of a sleep paralysis episode I thought I would share an alternative point of view purely because, complex beings that we are, some methods may work better for some than others.
On finding yourself in conscious paralysis focus on trying to move just one part of you, the big toe is usually recommended. The theory being that once you manage to move your big toe the rest of your body will suddenly become free and you will have complete control again.
I have had success with this method and once I managed to move a small part of me then I did become free. This was just one time however among many, many times that I have tried so hard to move but with no success. The same goes for trying to talk or shout, I have tried so hard many times and only once managed to make some small croak.
While this approach of breaking out of the sleep paralysis may work better for some I still think the more relaxed approach and going back to sleep for a little while is still best. The reason for this is that in fighting against the paralysis you increase your levels of anxiety in the process. If it doesn't work you just make yourself more scared and bring more stress upon yourself and it becomes a bigger problem for you in general.
If your not too troubled by the experience however and you're not finding it traumatising then you may wish to try moving. Just another tactic for you only you can decide which you'd prefer to take.
